The penny finally dropped thanks to prodding from Jaye. I found bits of the messages quite confusing, and in one respect misleading. I don't see any necessity for the fourth word of the six-word phrase and it most definitely led me astray.

To see how the 8-letter word relates to the title just think of colleges, etc.

Thanks both of you. I've finally crawled over the line! Thoroughly enjoyable and a few months ago I would never have dreamt I could finish a crossword like this. Progress indeed, and a lot has been due to all the help from the great people on this site.

I still can't see it!

My NW quadrant contains E's, a K, but no P. But as far as I can see, the initial letters of the paired answers includes a few E's and a couple of K's, but no P either. ??

Demeter - go through your initials again starting N, M, A..... and then write out all of your 35 letters in that quadrant. Compare them and you'll find there is a 36th letter from the initials that will be the penultimate letter of 11dn.

Aargh! I still don't see it.

Because there are Es and Ks in the quadrant already, I assume I'm looking for a P in the paired answers' initials. But I can't find one?!?

I've got KIDDOS for 19 (formerly KINGED) and KAVA for 29.

One of the Ks goes to the first cell of 13. Where does the other one end up?

Demeter, you need to double-check your work very methodically. You've either got a wrong entry in the new NW quadrant or you've miscounted letters. KIDDOS is not relevant because it's not one of the original entries, but the letter is still K because the original begins with K, as you said.
The initial letters of all the original entries, ignoring those from unpaired clues (which the second instruction, confusingly, fails to tell us) are used to fill the new 6x6 NW quadrant. There is an exact match if you complete 11dn correctly.
If you cannot get an exact match then one of your new entries in the NW is wrong or one of your original answers is wrong.
