So, it is more than the red button?
The coloured buttons, too?.
Seems like it is not tuned into TV/ Freeview receiver.
I think you have to put in a code.
Does the infra red light flash on the remote when you press the button?
What I do when I have a similar problem, is, put the question on Answerbank, Technology section.
It will not cost you anything. Buenchico is very good if he replies.
Or, why not use the link I kindly gave you and phone for advice?
Malone, you can use red button on Sky Sports channels as well. For choosing different football matches, or golf pairings etc and for Skybet.
Yes, I watched the Oaks but I think my horse is still running.
I was watching the womens doubles on Eurosport!

I had forgotten about Buenchico. He was brilliant helping me some time ago. I had six people also giving me advice with a very tricky problem

I agree, Jazzgirl, he is excellent and thorought.
So was Chuck Fickens but he has not been on for some time.
Elle, two votes here for Buenchico!

Thanks, Rusty - Elle mentioned that she had only Freeview and also that her red button didn't work. I thought she was perhaps trying to access the red button channels on ITV (24) - which wouldn't happen.

No, that's true, Malone.
I have an idea that it will be something fairly simple.

Since setting up the new UNIVERSAL remote some time ago ( other remote died) we haven't been able to use the red button during BBC transmissions of the tennis. My husband set it up but says he now can't remember what he did! or didn't do! and I haven't a clue!
Mainly want to use it during Wimbledon which is nearly upon us. All other functions, recording etc and replaying, all work fine, so no major disaster, just an inconvenience for that one function
No, Rusty, no red light flashes on the remote when I press the red button, or any other coloured button.
Sorry if I'm being a pain!

Well, Elle!
I suspect it is needing the code reset.
First though, I would unplug the TV and Freeview box from the electric socket on the wall. Just for a minute and then switch on. I sometimes have to do that when my Skybox "freezes". Then, all is well.
If that does not work you will need TV make and model number, same for Freeview box, and pick somebody's brains. The info, almost certainly, will have been asked for before, on Google.
Or try Answerbank, Technology.
Report back how you get on and we can have a group discussion about it.
Think it used to be called "brainstorming"!

No, Rusty, it's not something that can be solved by unplugging the appliances, I have already been down that road! I've tried the obvious things. This isn't something that has just happened.
No longer have any literature, but will look up the model numbers on the appliances themselves.
As I said It's no big deal but just an inconvenience! (notably so because of the advent of Wimbledon)
I'm putting folk to a lot of trouble! Apologies!
A pity the match between Murray and Djokovic was postponed because of the weather. Andy was in rather a crucial spot! I think it will be resumed midday on Saturday?
We're not doing well on the technical front , are we? Mechanic (different friend, other one away ) cannot look at the car until Monday, so we are without transport over the w/e.
Lovely day here after a damp beginning, especially beautiful this evening.

I do not think anyone is put out by your problem, Elle!
These things happen. It is called "life"!
If you look at the very bottom of that link I posted, there are one or two bits of advice.
Google the TV and Freeview models and you will find someone who has had this before, with a remedy.
Will you manage without a car?
Our weather is fine, too.
