Hi, Rusty!
Was there a one-legged character who appeared in several books?
I think he may have been killed (shot maybe?) in the end?
I shall unearth my books at some point and see what I can find....but they could be anywhere...!
And I could even be mixing this "person" up with a different book........
So don't worry about it!
I've just watched Elise on a video clip on BBC Sport and, no, I couldn't see any sign of her being knocked over ...but she was quoted on the BBC website as saying
"I was knocked over, I didn't fall on my own. I worked so hard. It has been taken away from me."
???
I am just popping out with the dog briefly - it is damp, but not actually raining at present.....

Hello, Elle!
I can not think of a one-legged character in any of the books.
But in Centennial, there was a one-armed character called Mule Canby.
Remember?
He was on the drive bringing the cattle North across the Llano Estacado (Staked Plain) and the deserts etc.
He rode with R.J.Poteet, Skimmerhorn, and young JIm Lloyd.
He ended up in a circus as a trick shooter but got burned to death in a fire in his tent.
I do not think anyone was to blame for Elise going down.
I did think, though, that the BBC were a bit over the top in the build-up they are giving her.
There are many super skaters there, not only Elise.
Fingers crossed for her in her next event, though!

Hi, Rusty!
Oops!
Now....... we shall not talk of "senior moments".........okay?
Yes, of course! You are right! One -armed!
( I was nearly there!)
And ok, he was burnt to death, not shot........but still dead!
Mule Canby must be of whom I was thinking?
The circus part is definitely ringing a bell.........
I am wondering whether or not to take my hot air brush to bits.,..... the drum has ceased rotating.
My husband is obviously dying to dismember it......
I have taken the precaution of ordering a new brush on Amazon!
Okay, clean hair, broken brush.............definitely time for dinner!

D hot air brushes straighten curly hair, elle? I shall have to get one if they do.
I hope at least some of you are having pancakes. I love Crepes Suzette! May be a 60s fad but so was prawn cocktail and I like that too!

I am researching a rather far flung family member, a ship's captain who was attacked in the Caribbean by pirates who lit wood piled round his feet to make him say where the cash/silver was. Just today I found that a few years later he was off Newfoundland when he came across a small boat with just 2 men who had been in it since their ship had been struck by an iceberg- 11 days. They had no supplies whatsoever and had eaten the other 5 men as they died. I don't think either survived, though. They had terrible frost bite and we are talking 1828.

Hello, Elle!
Sounds like you do mean Canby!
Remember he used to wind up Old Rags for trying to jump over the Pecos River?
Yes, Canby became part of a Wild West act in the circus.
Think he was calling himself "Daring Dan" then, but it was Jim Lloyd who recognised him.
Jim and his wife Charlotte Buckland (played by Lynn Redgrave in the mini-series) had gone to the circus and were amazed to see Canby!
What is a "hot air brush"?
Yes, I would let your husband have a go at it.
May be a simple fix.
Well, I have just betted on Elise to win the 1000 metres Short Track and Lindsey Vonn to win the downhill.
Should be good racing!

Hi, Rusty!
I wondered why you mentioned "pancakes " this morning......I did not realise it was "Shrove Tuesday/" Pancake Day"!
We have just - belatedly - had pancakes for a late dinner!
Your memory about the various Michener characters is very impressive.
Yes, I am now convinced that I do mean Mule Canby!
(although the name itself means nothing to me, I remember the tent death)
A hot air brush is a (large) style bristle brush heated by electricity, allowing heated air through the various holes/ outlets that will help straighten or curl one's hair, depending on how one uses the brush.
I use mine to straighten my curls.
And no, most unfortunately , we haven't managed to "fix" it!
It is heating but the drum will not rotate.......
A mystery?!
I hope your bets are successful - at least it will be fun watching to "find out"!

Hello, Elle!
Yes, today is Pancake Day.
I have not had one, though.
I am looking forward to the rest of the Olympics.
Hope Clare Balding calms down a wee bit!
Think it may be best to sling your old hot brush.
My hair is curly too!
My bets are just for fun.
An added interest.
Mule Canby was one of the lesser characters in the tale, could be why you do not remember him.
I read another of Michener's books called "Space".
It was about the solar system but it bored me rigid.
Was all about dark matter and black holes and it was turgid stuff.
I gave up after a few chapters.

Hi, Rusty!
I have ordered a new brush from Amazon - it should arrive on Friday!
I have not watched much of the present Olympics - I am not all that interested in the Winter sports.
We have not even made it onto the League Table, I don't think?
I tend rather to keep an eye on the highlights, just to see what is happening.......
I have not read "Space."
I rather think you "warned" me not to do so!
It is still raining here.... and feels chilly out.......
I am tired........
I am away to my bed before I end up sleeping on the sofa!

Good morning, Elle,
Bit dreich here and feels cold.
"Space" is awful. Don't go near it!
The woman's slalom has been postponed due to high winds.
But good news from the curling rink, both GB men and women have won their first matches.
Eve and team beat the Russians. OAR, is it?
Eve's two brothers are in the men's team.
I follow Eve on Twitter, but she is not tweeting while the Games are on.
Wonder if your nice lady neighbour-to-be will pop in today?

Good morning, Rusty!
It was very pleasant out walking the dog early this morning.
Blue sky - nary a cloud - and bright sunshine.
Bitter cold though......0C...and the frost made the paths very slippery!
We are forecast rain from 2 pm!
That is good news about the GB teams.
I think OAR are the non- flag -bearing/ non - colours wearing/ Russians?
Those not allowed to compete under Russia's name........ nor can they earn any official medals for their country.
My nice "Lady- who -wants - to- live- next door" is overdoing it a tad......
She "popped in" four times the other day!
