Good morning Rusty et Al. I've not looked at this thread for a couple of years. I noticed in one of yesterday's posts that you'd not come across carob before. You might have done and not realised it. It's mentioned under a different name in the New Testament. I can't give you chapter & verse but John (baptist or evangelist, I'm not sure) went into the desert and all his food was locusts and honey. We used to buy them as kids. In fact we sold them in our health food shop for forty years.

Hello, Pigale!
I found his books to be very readable and yet I don't read fiction.
I would not put anyone off from trying one.
His books on the South Seas are very good.
I think my favourite was Centennial, though.
He created excellent characters and good plot lines.
(Though one of my favourite characters in it was killed by a rattlesnake!)
That is only my opinion, though.
Others may think differently.
But his books sold in millions.
"South Pacific" was turned into a musical and film.
"Until They Sail" was made into a film, and "Centennial" became a mini-series on TV.
The only non-fiction work of his I have read is
"Kent State:What Happened and Why."
And that was many years ago!

Good day, Elle!
It's a bit dull and damp here but not cold.
Though there is snow at the loch and that is only 25 miles away!
I certainly agree with you and Pigale about Michener's treatment of the children.
A horrible pair, him and his wife!
Yes, "Centennial" was the one with Lame Beaver, Levi and Elly Zendt, Pasquinel, McKeag, Clay Basket, and one of my favourites was learning about the diplodocus!
An education!
Elise is in the final.
Think it is at 12.10.

Good morning, Dandybandy!
I may have eaten carob before and not known, yes!
But the name was new to me.
One of the things about crosswords for me, is, there is always something new to learn, most days!

Hi, Rusty!
I am amazed that you can remember the individual characters' names and who did what in which book of Mr M's!
I am sure I have read my books far more recently than you did yours - as you recommended some of the titles to me - and I get very confused!
Elly has to be my favourite person!
But there were many women of "strong character" in his books.
I might have a hunt for "Alaska".......
I have been talking to my elder daughter on the phone - they are stilll snuffly, but still hoping to come.....we shall talk again tomorrow.....
Maybe weekend might be a better option?
Have you watched the Short Track?
I haven't had the television on today.
Very wet indeed here now.

Hello, Elle!
I do remember most of the characters in Centennial, probably because it was a smashing book!
Like Cisco Calendar, Sheriff Axel Dumire, Hans "Potato" Brumbaugh, Jim Lloyd, Finlay Perkin, the Hereford cattle etc.
I liked them all, including Elly and Levi, and Clay Basket.
Weekend may be better for your daughter to visit?
Yes, I watched the Short Track.
It was very good racing.
No room for error there!

Hello, Jigjag!
Good clue!
Elise's better events are to come, so hopefully she can still win a medal!
Hope so, anyway!

Hi, Rusty!
Goodness me....all those characters' names still clear in your head!
I thought I did well to remember Levi, Elly and Lame Beaver!
Lucinda was another "strong" woman - but wasn't she from a later book then "Centennial"?
Who was the guy who popped up throughout several books and then later died?
His character part was a bit like a weave in a cloth?
Or is that too vague and fanciful for you to recognise whom I mean?
(I think I should know the name the minute I see it?)
A pity about Elise - she claims she was "knocked-over"?

Hello, Jigjag!
What a great clue - I not only "got it", I could parse it as well!

Hello, Elle!
Lucinda was the daughter of Clay Basket and Pasquinel, in Centennial.
I can not think of anyone who was in several books?
George Clooney was an "extra" in a crowd scene in the filmed series.
Possibly his first role as an actor?
Yes, pity about Elise, but that's the sport, I did not see anyone knock her?
Falls are very common.
But, her better events are to come.
Mind you, there are some super skaters there.
