Hello, Elle,
I often find that the books are cheaper on eBay, often from the same sellers.
I recognise C.P.Snow's name but I know nothing of his work.
Have a look on eBay.
I have bought quite a bit of stuff on it, mainly books, but also gardening tools, shoes, stationery, etc.
It is worth having a look.

Hello, Pigale!
It is around 1C with me too!
I have had the same experience with last second bidders.
It is not unusual!
I think you are very sensible setting your maximum and letting eBay do the work.
I often do that.
Well, coincidentally, Pigale, I am watching several tablets, too.
Lenovo Zens, I think they are called.
And a leather jacket, and lavender sachets (supposed to be good for getting rid of moths!) and some other items, including books.
But no bids from me yet, they have a while to run still.
I agree, it's a bit of fun, but nice if you win!

If you want t buy something on eBay, pigale, the best thing to do is log on and get to the item's page.Decide what your maximum bid is and put this in 15/ 20 seconds before the end of the bidding! It is a lottery but fun.
I've read the whole of the C.P.Snow sequence "Strangers and Brothers" elle and I reckon I could write in his style! In fact I think I already did so once on here. One time I was invited to a college feast at the last minute and, apart from not having the remotest idea what to talk about to the elderly cleric on my left, knew what to do. Even to taking my napkin, progressing downstairs to sit at a different table, eat dessert (fruit) with a knife and fork and passing the port to the left! I think this was entirely due to reading Snow.
If you can get hold of it, I enjoyed Charles Morgan's The Judge's Story but it is definitely not everyione's cup of tea. I have a first edition!

Hello Rosalind,

Yes, this is what I gathered one should do - problem, I forget
the time (and perhaps even day!) of the end of the bidding
session.
One thing struck me though, even if the tablets I was looking at
were cheap enough, the delivery fees seemed extortionate in
comparison to the price of the article.

Rusty, I saw 2 Asus Zen tablets - I wonder if it is the same article
whether in England or France?

Hello, Pigale.
Now, that is a good point.
I honestly do not know.
The electricity for charging may be different and that would be a problem.
You would have to investigate, I fear?

Hi, Rusty!
Yes, I shall take a look on eBay...
From reading these last few posts from folk, "betting" on eBay seems to be a popular pastime!
I know my daughter often buys items from there.
It sounds rather fun!
I think I would go down the route of setting an upper limit and letting eBay do the bidding for me!
I doubt I would have the patience to follow through and keep an eye on the bidding!
You have quite a list of items lined up!
Are you out of bullock's hides, that you are looking for a new leather jacket?
You should maybe try C.P Snow - the tales are good reading!

Hello, Pigale!
I nearly missed your post as we overlapped!
Your present temperature sounds similar to ours here, Very cold indeed, but we have been lucky in its having been bright and sunny.
Good luck with your eBay bidding1
This would all be new to me...I shall look into it!

Hello, Ros.
I am glad to find someone else who has read all the "Strangers and Brothers" series.
I loved them, but it was many moons ago when I read them..
I must do so again...
The one thing I do remember was how important it was to read them in sequence.
I shall look up that book you mentioned.
I enjoyed the last book that you recommended to me!

Hello Rusty,

I have several British electrical appliances here for which I have
adaptor-plugs, (two-sided things, you know?). But I wondered
how the shipment and the price could work?
I have never seen an ebay-UK whenever I type ebay on my searchbox -
it automatically directs me to the French site.

Also, some vendors will not send outside the UK, or vice versa.
Worth looking into though - A project for tomorrow!
