Hi elle
The link I gave made it sound much more complicated than it is. Benford noticed that early pages of logarithm tables were always dirtier than later ones as they had been used more. He looked at lots and lots of data sets and discovered that more numbers start with 1 than 2, more with 2 than with 3, and so on. Hence if data is published with a suspiciously high percentage starting with 8s or 9s, it may well be fraudulent.

Hello, Elle!
Lucky youse with the weather!
Dull here.
The DVLA is closed today, too.
I think Anne had a stronger voice than Pet Clark, but none of them really appealed to me.
I preferred Emmylou and Joan Baez, and later, Linda Ronstadt.
My interpretation of the schlager songs is, they were older middle of the roadie type songs?
Not for the young ones.
Yes, I purchased and changed the battery for the alarm, but shall wait on my son to put it back together.
I am a bit wary of electric.
I get watch batteries at my cobbler, fitted free, and a strap, when needed.

I was also a Linda Ronstadt fan, Rusty. It's a shame she's retired; due to ill-health, apparently. She had a great voice.

Hello, Kenyatta!
Linda is/was the biz.
She has Parkinson's disease and it was first detected in changes in her singing voice.
She can't sing any more, but still does speaking engagements.
Lots of clips of her on YouTube.
One of my favourites (apart from Blue Bayou!) is a duet she does with Johnny Cash, "I Never Will Marry".
Also a video of her receiving the National Medal of Arts from President Obama at the White House.
And an interview on CBS talking about her Parkinson's.

Unfortunately, Kenyatta, Parkinson's is what she has.
When she received her medal from President Obama, a young serviceman took her arm, so she felt secure, and escorted her on to the stage, but she was fine.
The award was for a "one-of-a-kind, voice".
Yes, she was a bonnie girl!
She recorded a lot of Mexican songs, too.
All on YouTube!

Good afternoon, Rusty!i
It is very hot and humid here now.......
I have been sitting out in the garden , reading my Ian Rankin book.......but have finally just been driven indoors by the heat!
It is lovely and cool (comparatively) here in the lounge!
Is your smoke alarm also electric then, backed up by battery?
Are these supposed to be more effective?
Ours are only battery -operated.
Re watch batteries.......
We do not have a Cobblers in the village.....but we do have a Jewellers on the High Street!
I'm not charged for the fitting...only for the cost of the battery.
I shall have to go there tomorrow, after the visit to the vet.
I already have an appointment for my dog to have her booster vaccination, so will take the cat along too, to be checked over and his condition investigated......
He is eating a very small amount of food ...but all is definitely not well..........
Have you done your puzzle?
John sent me five xwords this morning!

Hello, Elle!
It is pretty dreich here, I have to say.
Yes, my smoke alarm is wired to the mains and has a battery, too.
Sounds a bit odd!
Maybe the battery is in case of a power cut, d'you think?
My son is a plumber, so he is a lot more used to electrics with boilers and showers etc, so he is best fixing it.
Yes, best get the cat looked at.
Yes, I have finished my puzzle.
Quite a good one.
One new word for me, and a couple of words that I did not know what they meant.

Hi, Rusty!
Yes, I think you are right about the battery being a back up in case of a power cut.
Now that I come to think of it, our electric alarm clock works on the same principle. That also has a battery, so the time remains unaffected by an electrical shortage.
A sensible idea?
I have finished today's Jumbo GK, but am labouring a bit with the 15 x15?
I had not heard of "bhang" nor "proem"?
Although they were both easy enough to get from the parsing.
I had to look them up to check the definitions.
I'm stuck on 11a?
Do celebrities like Bauhaus? (13)
F?N?T?O?A?I??
As far as I am aware, Bauhaus is a German Art school?
"Functionalist" fits...but I can make no sense of it?
I can't do 7d either...so have no last letter for 11a.
Now, is "upsa -daisy" an answer to one of the clues that I haven't yet attempted?!
......or did you just "happen" upon it?
Maybe I need a coffee....... to alert the brain cells?
Although an ice-cream would go down better in this heat!
(I am sorry you have rain!)

Chris, Sorry...I have only just seen your earlier post!
Thank you for the clarification!
