rusty I've just checked Brewers which shows the first time it was used was the late 1940's on the radio show Educating Archie ...Beryl Reid as Monica uttered it .
Never used it myself !!

...also I hated having to play hockey at junior school.
The opposing team were so bad and I was goalie (chosen because I was so tall...not wide) I got so bored, I was doing handstands in the goal most of the time ;)

I never thought to look in Brewer's!

We didn't even play hockey! We played lacrosse and netball in the winter, and tennis and rounders in the summer.
Tennis was my favourite sport- I used to play almost every day, even if it rained sometimes!
I remember "Educating Archie" but not the phrase 'Jolly Hockey Sticks!'

We had to wear grey pleated shorts - but they were very demure - and not all that short! We wore those winter and summer!

It says on that link that you sent, Rusty, that it was never proved that the phrase was used on "Educating Archie", because no one can find it on any of the recordings?
