Hi, Rusty!
Now......you ask why would the Bishop of Ely even have a palace in London in the first place?
Because, like many other bishops, the Bishop of Ely had a seat in the House of Lords, and his parliamentary duties meant that he would have to spend a part of the year in London.
Therefore it made sense to have a home there.
But considerable efforts were made to ensure that such residences weren't subject to the laws - and taxes - of London.
So an "enclave " was established and Ely Place was legally a part of the Diocese of Ely, Cambridgeshire, despite its London location!
So this former residence of the bishops of Ely, for a very long time, was not actually regarded as officially part of London!
It remained a little bit of Cambridgeshire - even enjoying freedom from entry by the Metropolitan police, unless invited by its own governing body, the Commissioners of Ely Place.
The address for instance of the local pub used to be ""Ye Olde Mitre Tavern, Ely Place, Holborn Circus, Cambridgeshire"!
How about that for an interesting titbit of information!
Now, time for Eggheads...!
Like General MacArthur, "I shall be back......."

Hello, Elle. Goodnight Jazzgirl!
Yes, it is very interesting indeed.
The bishop would be a Lord Spiritual, I think?
Are there other similar places to Ely, Holborn, for other bishops, say?
Like the Bishop of Durham.
Has he a place to hang his hat in London?
Amazing that Ely Place is part of Cambridgeshire.
Not unlike a part of Canada being at Vimy Ridge in France.
Anyway, no messing with Queen Bess.
She evicted the bishop and installed one of her "favourites".
I shall miss "Treasures".
I learned quite a lot and was entertained at the same time.

By the by.......there is a book called "Flickering Lamps" - don' t know who wrote it - but it is about Christ and the Church..
It is that to which I thought you were referring!
Confusion abounds!

Hi, Rusty!
Now I am getting out of my depth, here , Rusty!
I have just looked up the definition of "enclave".....it is given as
"a portion of territory surrounded by a larger territory whose inhabitants are culturally or ethnically distinct."
Based on this precept , I think I have read (but where?) that there are four (I think) other places like this dotted about the world!
One , I think, is an Italian town in Switzerland?
I shall have to do some research!
(Ely Place is no longer a part of Cambridgeshire...it now belongs to London!)
I am being called for dinner.......my husband has made Shepherd's Pie!
And your son will be visiting you?
Talk in a bit......
