Thanks, syzzie! A treat as always. Starred: 5, 14, 17A; 1, 7, 12, 21, 28, 31D. Heck, might as well not bother starring. Love the very simple-looking but ingenious ones.

You're welcome.
My sentiments exactly, including almost every star as well.
Rather easy, though I did get stuck for a bit in the SE corner with 22, 27, 28, & 37.
One crack pulled it all together. (-;

Have done only about half. Could anyone give me a hint for 5 dn Varlet having a long time in servitude (7) First letter P, and perhaps also 1 d which has me completely foxed Drive away with a load of sound gear and rug cleaner (7) ??A??O?
On checking hairless dogs (not got that one either!), found there is one called a xoloitzcintle. Now, that's a word for Clueless or PR.

Cheers syzygy, I'm playing catch up with your previously posted WSJ still to do. Very enjoyable with quite a few belters with my favourites being 5a & 1d.

@ ros
5d varlet not as a scoundrel but a (no longer) hotel menial employee
1d load is a container indicator, rug similar to cockney
syrup
27. Over here not necessarily a dog, hair (or lack of it) and it's parting

A 27 - is not the name of a dog breed, but a characteristic
"... like a hairless dog?

The def is the first phrase, a Yiddish word, past tense.

Thank you, had no idea the word was Yiddish. Only short of 3 ordinary clued words now, all SE corner but still mystified by the box contents.
I like 32 dn. So simple.
