Having toughness and determination. The only word I can fit here is RUGGEDwhich doesn't seem to answer the clue at all. DOGGED would seem much better. However the initial doesn't match withe D of 35 across, for which I have FIXING. Clue is firmly attaching.

What letters are you certain of for each clue?

35A: fixing

Definition of 'rugged' in Chambers....sturdy, tough, robust, giving an appearance of strength
