Done by Monday a.m. without recourse to Chambers, Anagrammmer, or this forum, as is my self-imposed rule.
So, now it's been put in the post to the Times with a clear conscience.
Would have it done sooner but for a persistent puzzlement with a down on the left - a mindworm from my childhood listening to Larry the Lamb had a well-known churlish resident of the Twin Cities of Toytown/Arkville spelling his name with a 'W' - then it came to me in a vision of one of those signs on low beams in pubs....
Also spent all of Sunday with three pre-teen grandchildren at the Winchester Science Centre - wonderful - amazingly child-friendly, Dad- and Mum- friendly, and Ma Ma and Baba -friendly too.
World-class Planetarium, very instructive, fascinating and motivating interactive stuff - thoroughly recommend it to all parents, grandparents, uncles and aunties looking for a rainy-day-out venue accessible from almost anywhere in southern England. Better than frowsting (frousting??) with a crossword by the fire. A suitable cryptic clue eludes me.
