Oh no. Is the clue not in the second word? I would still be tearing my hair out had it nor been for your help.

I don't understand this recent militant approach.

Look at all the threads on the site. They all give answers or very heavy hints. I only look when I've finished usually to see if I can help. Surely that is the answer don't look on a thread for a crossword you are currently working on?

I agree with DJ.
I try to avoid giving full answers rather than hints, but it's very common and doesn't bother me.
(Like, "if you don't want to know the answer look away now").
Personally, I think that two days after publication of a puzzle we can be more open about giving answers.
Anyway, I love this forum and the great camaraderie.
Everyone's view on how much or little help help should be given is valid. So let's not fall out.
Again, personally, there are times when I feel like screaming " just tell me the answer!".
Having said that, I never actually submit completed puzzles for prize.
I can understand some people being annoyed if they are hoping to win.
But isn't the competition really between setter and solver?
Although - dare I say it? - there is a tiny element of vanity about being the first to finish and give help here.
I am certainly guilty of that, though it very very rarely happens.
Gives an edge to it all though.

If that miracle ever happens and I finish first I'll definitely let you know!

A frustrating week, I thought. Always a shame to have a puzzle that you can finish (and presumably send in and win) without a PDM or any real idea what's going on.

Clever construction it turns out, but not a favourite for me.

Am I missing something? I cannot see the relevance of the vacant cells or the phrase 'so as to confirm a thematic word or instruction'

read 1st and last column left then right, left then right etc. You should have a relevant word.
