What a kind offer which I may take you up on tomorrow. I haven't yet had a penny drop moment re the non word answers, but will look again tomorrow. I suspect some geopolitical knowledge may be needed. Thanks again

Well, still a long way off despite all the generous help.
I have always been of the opinion that doing crosswords is a complete waste of valuable time.
Could have spent the weekend doing useful things such as mowing the car or washing the lawn.

Marca - not much geopolitical knowledge required ultimately. The key to the symmetricalmly opposite clues is in the columns with the missing lights.
