Gently Scotsman enters waterway

The only answer I can come up with is PIANO which I know means "softly" but why else would it be the answer? I hope someone can explain it to me please (or suggest a better answer.) I would be very grateful, thanks!

Scotsman = Ian inside river PO

scotsman: Ian
waterway : Po ( river)

Scotsmen are often referred to as Ian in crosswords. Not sure about the O though.
