Great stuff yet again syzygy, many thanks. Love the preamble re the grid entry for 1a. I also like 34 & 39 across, 9, 36 & 25 down with the last my favourite. A slight criticism re 17a but I'll save any comment or discussion until well after others have the chance to solve. Keep 'em coming, please.

Thanks, syzzie. This one was a breeze, but fun as always. I usually don't care for anagrams all that much, but 31A and 4 and 10D, though simple, are very nicely put (especially the last).

@Ginge & Aristo

Had tagged most of your choices as well. Also 29A, wink, wink.
Agree that 17A is not phrased correctly, as it doesn't seem to account for the O.
Had a ? for 29D, but a check in a few dictionaries explains it. I've always used the one-syllable NA (?) pronunciation.

40A - the parsing of "bid to avoid a suit" escapes me.

40A - Duh! Was trying to find something to fit, & remove, between the last two letters.

Just noticed the ? at 6D. Obviously an anagram, but what is the significance of the second sentence?
Will probably have an AHA moment in 5 munutes.

6D. Stud going out for red beer? Just the opposite! (7)

becomes: Red beer going out for stud

I think that's all there is to it, syzzie.
