Order links: the misprints, in clue order, give 8 titles. Each of the names from the unclued lights is linked (in an identical way) to one of the titles. In clue order *of the titles*, take the missing letters from the linked names and they form an 8 letter word which will explain where the letters are to be placed in the empty cells.

Thanks for tying up that lose end, Dorsetjan. I see now how the order of the titles is helpful. Found some of these leaps really difficult and still wonder if we have to justify the title in our submissions?

I really enjoyed this puzzle: lots of ingenuity in the clues and a clever endgame. I think I understand the conduit reference though it is quite obscure (like some of the literary works)!

My only remaining issue, like Rickye I think, is how to confirm in the grid that I've understood everything.

I thought at first that the word made by the eight letters might appear somewhere in the grid and that was what we had to highlight, but it appears not.

So I take the instruction to mean that we simply highlight the eight letters that we transpose to the otherwise unfilled cells, even though they are dotted about?

Orient fan - Chambers defines conduit as a means of transmission or communication. This is what the K******D is I presume. I have finished and highlighted the 8 letters but I haven't got a clue how the titles are supposed to help - as usual I'm UNCLUED!
I agree about just highlighting the 8 letters.

look in the middle of the grid in 3 consecutive lines you may see something you recognise starting with q

What is the relevance of the titles and their order?

I don't know if there's any greater significance to the titles than that they're literary works by the eight authors...

The order does matter because that's how you get the eight letters spelling K******D.

And I agree with unclued about just highlighting the eight letters.

I highlighted the whole k******d rather than the 8 letters.

Yes I agree with you both now that I have re-read the preamble. It would be easy to make a mistake and only highlight 8 letters.
