The clue says 'Had room for' - so I think the 'slept ...(whatever number)' reasoning works better than 'had a room'/slept. The 'for' must be there for a reason, surely?

I've never seen it in the past tense, malone - that's my objection.

"The house sleeps six" - OK

but why "the house slept six"?

If you had came home from a holiday cottage, say, it would make perfect sense to say to your friends.
"The cottage slept six".
Surely?
