SLEPT.
it sleeps six, say. Had room for six.
A "let" is a rented property.
P for piano in music.

Well, it's Second, then Piano in LET (rented property) but the definition escapes me (unless it is supposed to mean "took a room at a hotel" - feeble, though)

Why the past tense, though, rusty - "sleeps six", yes, but "slept six"?

Possibly, Chris, "had" is past tense, as is "slept"?

mmmm - I think, perhaps, my "feeble" definition is (a little) better - poor clue, I think.

I should have put "slept six" in my explanation.
I agree, it is an "iffy" clue.
And the answer is not "Acid"!

I don't understand where "six" came from - there is no mention of it in the clue. The clue is very straightforward: Had room for second piano in rented property.

Second is S followed by P (piano) in LET (rented property) gives SLEPT

Had a room (in a hotel) is the same as saying slept (in a hotel) - perfectly good logical clue
