Totally irrelevant to the answer....I've always known the card game 'Black Maria' as 'Dirty Nell' ! Maybe it's a regional name choice?

Lots of names for it, elle - in fact "hearts" is a variant, also "black widow" (and others I've forgotten).

btw I'm hoping "old kitty" is an expression for "the nick" - a "Black Maria" was the name for a police vehicle, especially the classic Wolseleys in the 50s.

Please could I have clues girl the following:

9. Servant comes back-before going on date to get sparkler (7). Diamond ??
10. Wright-lifter & bell ringer. What a card! (4)
19. Hooray! Grub is prepared-for no more than nine.. (10)
21. Heard in Paris that during this you could go bust (5,2,2)
