Delete the perimeter, then delete rows 2, 4, 6 etc and columns 2,4, 6 etc. It will then become clear

To be perfectly clear, it's delete row 2 etc of the original grid, not row 2 once the perimeter has gone. Likewise column 2 etc.

Most deleteful! How do these wonderful setters come up with new and original ideas week in week out?

This ideaa has been done before in the listener series probably over 10 yeers ago though!

Thank you. I am increasingly amazed (and enraged) by my stupidity. I read "alternate" as a verb with the accent on the first syllable, so it became impossible to comply with the message.

I have/haven't drawn a blank with this one.

alpaca - I would say yes. I think it's the words that go.

I'm sure you're right Unclued it's just "a**" and "un****ed" that bother me referring specifically to the "g***"
