I've an answer for #3 that I'm sure is right, but I don't see where the "coffee" fits in - is it needed in the clue?

Hi chrise, it's most definitely part of the solution (no pun intended re solution).

Perhaps I've the first word wrong then - I thought "box" would do for it.

Happy New Year, Jolan. How nice to have you back in such cracking form. All clues had your distinctive devilish stamp on them. Will be back at 5 to post my stabs ....

Just taking a peek. Nice to see Jazzy and ab too. Methinks there'll be no need to post my parsing at 5.

Hi Jolan.
Another great set of clues. Here is my stab at them:
1. Faithful old part-time Triple Alliance (4) – LEAL? (In clue – old Scots word meaning faithful)
2. 2. Oh dear! Don’t close both concert halls (4)- ODEA? (Oh and dear without endings – “don’t close”, gives Odea, concert halls)
3. Flyer made out of coffee box and string (4,7) JAVA SPARROW? (Coffee – Java, Box – spar and row – string gives Java Sparrow – a flyer)
4. It’s dark and labour-intensive work without an anvil (10) TENEBRIOUS? (Subtractive anagram- “labour intensive” without “anvil” gives tenebrious- dark)
5. They revive some swimmers with sex appeal and leave leader. Some others are placed outside (8,5) SMELLING SALTS? (Some swimmers – Ling (plural) with sex appeal – SA and leave leader- L. Placed outside this are other swimmers- Smelts, giving Smel Ling SA L ts- which revive)
Thanks again.
AB
