Wrong title = The uselessness of literacy? That has 24 letters/4 words.

Ah, I've just read the preamble more carefully. I was counting the proper titles. "The uses of literacy" is the correct title. "Uses" is the only word that fits.

Got it, thank you cockie. I agree that this is not as scrupulously fair as it could be.

My last entry is 19 Across, and I have all but the unchecked letter. All I can come up with for the word required is the last word in the title of a book by Jerome K Jerome, but I'm at a loss to justify this with a Malapropism, especially one that fits the "clue". As others have pointed out, some of these "clues" are quite loose. In my opinion too loose. Can anybody give me a nudge without giving the game away?

The Malapropism is just the last word, I think - overfilling the .... (of the car).

Thank you Malone. That (kind of) works, but I'm sure you take my point. Still, after last week's nightmare, I really shouldn't complain, I suppose.

I think some of the malapropisms are a bit of a stretch, a bit contrived - but they're not so bad that they don't work.

Is 33ac a 2013 novel by a British writer? If so, I don't see how the third word of the title works.

33 is a Sci-Fi novel filmed as the Village of the Damned.

There's only one word which fits the first word of the clue for 4 down really, but I too had no idea of the word-play.
