OK for 'about' = re and 'French'= Fr but cannot
equate 'modern' and /or 'art' with the remaining
letters.

Re + fresh - modern + es which is the French equivalent of art as in "thou art"?

Thanks AB. Seems obvious now. I was stubbornly fixated on the nicely misleading 'Fr' as an abbreviation for French.
