"It just won't wash" = It won't hold up in court

maybe hold up = wash as in "that does not wash with me" = "it doesn't hold up" ?

Hi Les, the expression "that won't wash" means the same as "doesn't ring true' ie "hold up" to scrutiny;
Chambers "wash" about half way down; "to stand the test, bear investigation".
