Wit's end time. Last two have me stumped:

I've found that ATAP & ARAR are both tree names but can't establish whether or not they are from New Zealand. If you add OSI (the first letters of the next three words) you get ATAPOSI or ARAROSI. Both of these sound possible as Zulu leaders, but that's where the trail ends. Any other offers?

I think the answer must be AMAKOSI which has to do with traditional Zulu clan leaders.

There is a plant Euphobia Amak ("African Candelabra") which seems to grow in arid climates although I don't know if it came out of New Zealand. Then, as John from Arran points out, "osi" are the initial letters of words from the clue.
