Great clues as always. I particularly like number 2- fiendish. I’m not 100% sure of my answer to 3.
My suggestions are:

1. Spring chicken register (5,2) CHECK IN. Anagram of chicken (spring is indicator)

2. Cut down and captured, grabbing criminal closer (5-7)CLOSE CROPPED. Cut down is def. Anagram of closer (indicator is criminal) inside copped (caught)

3. Going from coin-teller to successful speculator (5-7) MONEY SPINNER. Coin=money and teller as in story teller=Spinner

4. Bishop abandons a workhorse to grass (3,2) DOB IN. Dobbin (workhorse) missing B for bishop. Grass as in inform on.

5. Old British man with socialist wit is attached to pioneering transport (7,5)COVERED WAGON. Cove (old British man) Red (Socialist) Wag (wit) On (attached to).

My offerings are:

1. CHECK IN (register) spring(anagram indicator) chicken

4. DOB IN ( grass) b (bishop) abandons "dobbin" (workhorse)

5. COVERED WAGON ( pioneering transport) Cove (Old British man) + red (socialist) + wag (wit) + on (attached)

Stumped on the rest. Looking forward to the answers.
Thanks as always jolan. x

Hi again jolan
I had to do some cooking so didn't have much time after all. I got COVERED WAGON, and worked out DOB IN, but didn't get round to checking if it was actually an expression for "tell on"!

Thanks again - hope your walk was as good as ours.

Gee! This is not my day. The net went down for some time here. I find BT seem to be getting worse and their laughable BTmail is a real pain. It was much better when it was BT Yahoo! mail.

Great solving and parsing ab and Daniel; 5/5. Well done Jazzy and Trevor.

Methinks I'll make next week my final week for 2014 and I'll take a break from "5" until the New Year.

Thank you all for participating. Have a lovely week.
Bless
J

Funny you say that, jolan - I've been having intermittent problems with BT the last two days, after many years of relatively trouble-free surfing.

Sous chef today, jolan. Shepherds' pie is one of my wife's specialities (brilliant today) - I was just chopping and making the mashed potato topping.

A couple of months ago, in fact, Trevor - though I am basking in my new-found status!
