Help! 21d. Mammals, first in Americas, overrun by amazons? (5)......I have ....ANTA?
Also, can someone please explain the "alphabetical significance " of the unchecked letters (too numerous to mention if you haven't seen the puzzle! ) ?

Anta's are tapirs, first in america = a in ants (Amazon ants).
A is paired wih z, b with y, c with x etc ...... m with n.

Antas.
First in Americas is "A".
Surrounded by Amazon "ants".
An anta is a tapir.
