Can you change the top word into the bottom word in the number of steps indicated. Change only one letter at a time and do not change the order of the letters. Proper names, slang, and obsolete words are not allowed.

U have one too many steps. Don't forget the fourth step has to be to change to the word gate

Possibly life - lite - gite - gate. The middle two are hardly obscure and are in Chambers and OED.
