Barretter - ALTER is correct for the first five rows. The sixth letter is N - hope that helps!

Just struggling with the wordplay in 11A, I'm sure I have the right answer due to the omitted letters, and I have the end of the word parsed, so it's just the two letters (I think!) corresponding to 'pair' that I'm just not seeing. Thanks for any help!

Is not the "pair" the name for the land mass in the south of Europe which contains two countries and a British enclave?

Barretter, you're completely right, I was looking far too closely! Thanks

Thanks Unclued. There seem to be only two....possibilities for the twelve letter word, one of which was what I suggested in my first post. Still trying to sort out the last few letters.

Barretter - apologies. I think I misunderstood your original post. The 12 letter word should describe what you are faced with in several instances, and as the preamble says could also be an instruction.

Barretter - look for the last seven letters of the 12 letter word in another clue answer.

I presume you are referring to 36A (which I did mention in my first post) but aren't we supposed to find the letters as "omitted" in 12 separate clues? I can see the first 8 and the last one but not 9,10 and 11 (but I can see different "omitteds" in three other solutions. Puzzled!

34dn has an omitted V as second letter - does that push you closer?

Thanks very much for that : I had a different boy's name there - same as the actor called McGregor and was using the wrong spellings for 32 down and 33 across. It seems to me that there is an extra "omitted" "o" in 7 down, which put me off a bit.
