1 not TOLSTOY then!
2 ?
3 PENDRAGONSHIP - so in Uther Pendragon the "Pendragon" was a title rather than a surname, then?
4 AT DAGGERS DRAWN
5 TINNITUS almost works (apart from the letter count, of course!)

Thanks jolan - glad to hear you are feeling better.

Enjoyed this as always Jolan. Despite the illness these were tough as always. Get well soon.
My guesses are as follows. Number one I’m not confident about.
1. Writer for a little one’s amusement? (7) PLAYPEN - a cryptic pun ? Thought Tolstoy at first but it didn't work so hopefully this is right.

2. Position for every inhabitant or outsider (9) LAYPERSON- DEF-outsider. Position ( lay) for every (per ) +( son) inhabitant

3. The authority of an ancient British chief to hem in and haul aboard (13) PENDRAGONSHIP -authority of ancient British chief. Pen (hem in) + Drag on ship (haul aboard)

4. Enemies and reserves return with painted weapons? (2,7,5) AT DAGGERS DRAWN- enemies. Reserves- TA backwards or AT painted weapons- are ‘daggers drawn’

5. Two knights united at heart by criminal sister's condition? (7) NUNHOOD- sister’s condition. N is knight U is United- N U N (2 knights with U ‘at heart’) + Hood (criminal)

My attempts were in vain, as it was neither an author at 1, nor a disease at 5. So a total failure this week for me. Do continue to improve John and take care. x

Well Daniel, a 'full house'! 5/5. Although your working is spot on, I'll shove mine on just to show how close they are. Well done Chris. Thanks for the good wishes, must be a careful chap over the next few days. Lots of water seems good advice Jazzy x

1. (cryptic pun) PLAYPEN

2. position (v) = lay; for every = per; inhabitant = son (son of Ireland/Wales/etc); lay + per + son = LAYPERSON = outsider (Chambers Thes)

3. hem in = pen; haul aboard = drag on ship = PENDRAGONSHIP = The authority of an ancient British chief.

4. reserves = TA; ‘return’ = AT; painted weapons? = daggers drawn (draw = paint, in Chambers Thes & paint = draw, in Collins Thes); AT DAGGERS DRAWN = enemies

5. n = knight (chess); two knights = nn; united at heart = n(u)n; ‘by’ = beside;
criminal = hood; sister’s condition? = NUNHOOD (Chambers def).
