Temerity, nerve/braveness. It's 'merit'/distinction, inside ('penned') Tey, surname of Josephine, an author.

To be pedantic (what, me? - sorry, malone!) Josephine Tey is one of the pen names of Elizabeth Mackintosh.

Do try to get hold of "The daughter of time" - compulsory reading for all Richard III fans.

You never cease to amaze me , Chris, with the things that you know!
I particularly enjoyed "The Franchise Affair" by Josephine Tey - probably one of her better known mystery novels.

Hi elle
"Brat Farrar" is my other favourite.

Nicola Upson has written a series of detective stories with Josphine Tey as the detective. I'm not sure if I like them, but the one (which features Alfred Hitchcock) set in Portmeirion was interesting for someone who knows the place.

Chris, you can be as pedantic as you like - and thanks for the additional info.
