Phew! Finally finished, although I expect others will get through it more quickly than I did.
My mind tends to baulk initially at special instructions, but once started I found it really engrossing.

I can relate to that. Sometimes The Spectator has a complicated preamble, which I wind up reading over & over as I solve.

Cox & Rathvon used to work for The Atlantic, turning out some rather challenging puzzles. Especially enjoyed the unnumbered ones.

This was rather easy. I hope they haven't dumbed them down for the WSJ. I'll keep checking, & also go through the archives.

Thanks again syzygy, the style takes a bit of getting used to but a nice puzzle nevertheless with a few Americanisms but that is surely to be expected. I particularly liked the definition in (a) 2 and the wordplay in (e) 2. Please keep 'em comin'.
