I understand the theme now and have modified four answers.
Wouldn't mind some hints with the real answers to 5D and 36A. (I have the theme word part of 36A)

Got 5D - just need 36A

I've not got very far but thought 5d was cry + anagram, 36 solo + r with (i cit) in ?

Now looking at your 36A parsing.

I'm assuming you have the real answer now, as parsed by tracker pup.
Take away the first seven letters and replace with example of the other theme word.

Thanks, nelson - but I can't come up with a replacement. When you say the 'other' theme word, do you mean something different to the word used/meant in 10 D, 17 A?

sorry malone, I don't know how far on you are with the whole puzzle.
The formula, (as you pointed out earlier on) is to identify synonyms for the last word in the theme phrase.
Then you need to remove this from real answers and replace with brand names of the first word in the theme phrase.
Hope I've explained this clearly.
