Help please, parsing these.....

48a. Satisfy, for example, university - having learned about it. (7) - ASSUAGE (Satisfy)

It looks like:- for example = EG, + U(niversity) + It = SA (Sex appeal), but that leaves me with another SA unparsed, so I've gone wrong somewhere.

7d. Top bloke, heartless sort, extremely contented (8) - HAPPIEST would fit the def. (Contented), but other than - ST for 'heartless sort', I'm at a loss.

39d. "Without class" describes individual? That's clear (9) - EXONERATE (Clear)

I think it might be AS SAGE (learned) around "it" - i.e. U.


If that's right, it's not very well constructed, though, so I'm not convinced.

Thanks Chris, you could be right. I'd discounted it because I just couldn't think of any instance where one could say 'As Sage' in place of 'Learned', but it probably is correct.

I thought maybe the the 'as' was 'for example'; then sage round U, as before?
