Is it me, or is the word 'retired' redundant in this clue?
(I have the answer).

"A stand made by shelving retired menial film actor"

Just noticed this post - yes, I thought the same.

I wondered if it meant that ETA was an obs or archaic word - but my dictionary doesn't say that.

My Chambers (12th edition) actually says ...'noun. especially formerly, a member of the lowest Japanese class...' I think the 'formerly' could mean that 'retired' is technically fine/correct?

I have the same Chambers, and I think you must be right.
All in all, I think this was one of the easiest puzzles in a very long time.

Yes, it was even easier than the broken bones we had recently - and I'd thought that one was quite simple.

I know this should be a separate thread, but I also had a problem with relevance of 'that's moving' in 34A.

I've no longer got the paper, so can't remember 34 A - sorry.

This is must be the easiest one for ages because it is the first in a long time that I have come close to solving :)

Only 2 left to solve, and 26 and 31 are the ones outstanding. So this htread is a bit infuriating. Back to scratching my head.

26 is a piece of furniture, starts with greek letter e, then actors surname (Richard ....)
31 is a word for "greater naked tailed armadillo", starting with french actress surname (Audrey ......), minus letter u
