I ,too, am having problems with 4 down "process of dividing into sections"
I have "synchronous" for 1 down and so "prosaic" does not work for 1 across and my word needs to begin with a "D" not a "C" ( I have ""subdued for 1 across)

Please, someone, put me right

I now see that Patricia has come up with answer for me. "Subfusc" for 1 down. I did not know that meant dull and dreary. Learn something new every day.

I originally had ISOCHRONOUS for 1D, which confused the issue even further. Even after I had corrected to SYNCHRONOUS, I thought 1A, dull, gloomy would be SHADOWY
