A bit of along shot.......Could it be 'forehand'? there was a tennis player named 'Budge' Patty

And Donald Budge, too.

Refers to Don Budge, I guess. (John 'Budge' Patty was only 10 in 1934.)

The wordplay is 'f' for fine, 'had', 'one' and 'r' (back - ie last letter - in thirty-four). Budge is the anagram indicator. Great clue.
