11 ac - I think the clue should have started "A bird..." A 5-letter bird losing its first letter and reversed. The misprint is in the second 2-letter word.
3 down - Misprint in 1st word; A resulting 2-letter word round a 4-letter word meaning hobbling losing its last letter. The answer is a S American animal.

31 ac - a 2-letter abbreviation for namely followed by a 3-letter word meaning a rough stretch of water. Definition is last word and carries the misprint.
32 dn - Misprint in 1st word; look in Chambers under Cat for an unusual definition and put its 1st letter at the end.
36 ac - Answer when reversed gives a synonym for moderate Tories. Misprint in last word.

son1ofrover1. Many thanks! I'm having a bad day. I'm sure the answer, when I get it, will make me want to kick myself. In the meantime I am going to the pub for a guinness or two. Might get some inspiration. Will try again later.

If you happen to be in Scotland a pint (or two) of heavy may help.

Thanks everybody for all the hints. Looks like I'm going to have to buy a new bottle of Tippex.

Could the second-to-last word of the instruction have a double meaning? I don't see the need to draw any additional lines around or about the thematic items. But that particular word ordinarily has its own significance in the context of a crossword puzzle. Thanks.

Don't you mean the third-to-last word ? If so, given Dipper's message, I took it to signify except rather than have the connotation you describe.

11a is good as is; the bird is 4 letters long with its 2nd letter being elided.
