I came home from the Turkish bath, I was somewhat hungry, so visited our pantry and set the table with buntings, but my fear was fatty so I stopped eating and performed a quick anthem type chant (should be 'antiphon') with the wife before getting my head down for the night...

Elle, you will usually find that people who do not find enjoyment in the more discerning crossword puzzle will 'spit & cuss' at very rare words being used in the grids. The thing is, when designing grids, you kinda get stuck in the corners sometimes and there just isn't a common word that'll fit in so you have to find something that may be less known like a piece of cloth worn by amazonian tribal women during marriage to give a fruitful future or a dwarf shrew only found in the jungles of Burma. If you have a good understanding of how cryptic clues work and are used to doing the broadsheet offerings, then part of the fun is finding the odd rare word in the grid to improve your vocabulary. Well, that's what I enjoy and I hope you do too.
By the way, the above definitions are made up, I was just using them for effect.
Take care, Les40

Good memory, Les.

It was in JE 2012-08, clued by GK.
46A (G) Plover considers whether to fly on ...... (de-briefing at the end, so to speak) (7)

There was a controversy.

Plover

Order: Charadriiformes
Family: Charadriidae
Subfamily: Charadriinae

Ortolan Bunting

Order: Passeriformes
Family: Emberizidae
Genus: Emberiza

But who's counting? (-;

Les, I so agree with you about discovering new words, when I come across a new word I also take a note of it and the definition for future reference. The only reason I bought this box set, which is Published by Penguin by the way and has different authors the crossword solver was written by Rowland G.P. Hill,was because I am over from Spain where I have lived for the last few years and have no reference books here in the UK. I love to look things in up in books for answers and only use use the web as a last resort so's not to make it so easy to solve the clues. It also keeps the little grey cells ticking over. Also I am getting better at parsing by using this site and seeing where the clues are coming from.

I am amazed at the response this little post has had and the interesting replies you have all given.

Incidentally all these books 8 in total only cost £4.00 the recommended price on the box is £49.00, and they are in mint condition.

Thank you all for your interest.

Cheers

Linda

@Les40

That attitude is very prevalent in a NY Times blog I follow. Quite an uproar about unusual or archaic words. On the other hand, they complain about common fill. Go figure.

The Speccy is almost guaranteed to have a couple of obscure ones (to me) every time.

I'm also positive the word is "esurient". A web search (yes) shows 29 dictionaries.

"ensurient" does show in a few places, as elle mentioned, but typos get propagated out there because sites plagiarize so much.

What a bargain, Linda. Cheers.

I enjoyed this - love words. I would have guessed zuchetta as something to eat - cross between zuccini
and bruschetta!
Enjoying the views of beautiful Yorkshire on TV.
Mags.

What an interesting thread. Thanks Linda. I was unable to respond earlier as I have had no broadband . Now finally fixed. I agree with Magworth. What lovely Yorkshire countryside. I am enjoying watching the Tour de France as always.
