Can't be literal, surely?
Contr(act) + alto??

Is "tobeat" = to beat or to be at?

If " to be at" then would be very straightforward

contralto = the lowest musical voice in women;

"unlikely to be at a high point in the scale

My misprint: it should be 'to beat'. Not that it makes much difference for what is a disappointingly
transparent clue for an otherwise satisfyingly challenging cryptic puzzle.
I thought I was missing something...
