'charade' makes sense - 'ch' for 'chief' replaces 'p' for 'priest' in 'parade'.

Hi rusty, I saw your answer to DM (Fri) - "Old, sad Italian city losing heart" (6)
TRISTE will fit what I have got (I know TRIESTE is an Italian city) but what does TRISTE mean? Old?
Your help would be appreciated because I managed to do the crossword very quickly, today, except for this clue that I have been pondering over ALL day! [did not have time to tackle it yesterday] Cheers.

Hello Finley.
Chambers defines "triste" as "sorrowful; dismal."
The French word "triste" means sad.
I vaguely remember a film called Bonjour Tristesse.
Cant remember what it was about, though!
