History exam by Columba finding this hard going - 22 of the clues have a superfluous word, gtfl a kickstart with
1a Hamper newspaper covering a solemn case (6) ?E????7a Pressure acceptable in finish (6) no letters so far. Many tks.

1. Peapod, a case. (ped is hamper, po is solemn and it's covering/including 'a').

7. Duress, pressure. It's u/U (acceptable), inside 'dress'/finish.
