10a. The clue is sad comic impersonating miser with this. I have poignant as the answer,is this correct.I had p?i?n?n? but I cannot see what can be the answer

if you remove the latters of 'miser' from 'impersonating' you are left with those letters making up 'poignant'
I'm not sure though, where I'm going with this...?

Many thanks to you all, I can see it now but honestly I would never have seen how the word poignant was arrived at. I can now go and study the horses and look for some miserly bets in a poignant frame of mind

This is very left field, but!
One meaning of poignant is "penetrating".
If the word "miser" penetrates the word "poignant", it could give "impersonating".
Or maybe I should just take myself out for a walk!
