1d 'White Book seen at intervals' (7). Ans: 'albumen' = 'white of egg'. O.K. so far, but what's the parsing? 'b' is 'book' and 'a lumen' is a measure of light perceived by the eye, hence 'seen' - but neither my Chambers dictionary nor Wikipedia mentions 'intervals' in their definitions. Can any of you scientists out there explain all this to a simple linguist? Or am I on the wrong tack?
Incidentally, am I alone in finding the Chambers website still down? Any news ?

White - Albumen

Book - Album
Seen at intervals - en (even letters of seen)

I think it's:

Book = ALBUM
sEeN (at intervals)

Book = album + (s)E(e)N

Book = album ?
En = interval?

Chambers still down for me.

The other EN explanations were better than mine.
I was thinking of printing but may be way off there.
