Have trawled other threads for answers to my queries - thanks to mamya, ginge, ab & rogerw - your replies to other people have helped me. Still stuck on:
3D "Deceive with lie, but not in meeting" (10) _ have C?N?E?T?O? - all the words that will fit don't seem to make sense (to me anyway)

Thank you mamya - had sort of figured CON - deceive, but couldn't see the rest!

Perhaps you would explain 28A
"If only I could manage to hold a small probe"
Have put OTOSCOPE - 'cope' - manage, 's'- small - but the rest??

"If only I could manage" - O to cope!

+ S (Small)

Best I can do.

O to can mean 'if I could' like o to be in England etc.. otoscope is a probe.

Thank you rogerjw and to you mamya - like both of your explanations. I knew that an otoscope is a probe (for sticking in ears!)
This is only the third Times crossword I have tackled and it would be frustrating to be unable to understand the "workings". I am beginning to see how the setter's mind works! Cheers.

Thank you! While you are there (so to speak) could you explain something about this site (fairly new to this too) - when I am waiting (hoping) for a reply I find I have to go 'off' the page to allow anything to come through - am I missing something?

You could press the refresh button, it won't happen unless you do something! Glad to have you on board.
