I have an eight word instruction, the initials of which are . . .

I've tried treating it as referring to the individual letters in the word or words following each of the prepositions. Which leaves some letters in the grid boxed in, but doesn't seem to do much else.

Hang on - do you think it might create a labyrinth. My handwriting is so bad I'm going to have to retranscribe it all. Grr.

Not unless it's a labyrinth with dozens of ways out. I'll come back to this later I think.

Do you think the L word is an instruction to raise US in some way?

Add Bars over A-W- and E (those letters)
under S-O-L- and D (those letters)
Left of T-U and S (those letters)

You end up with the grid as a MAZE. starts top
left corner cell and finishes bottom right corner cell. Follow the maze ODDLY to get a two word (9 7) description of the person. You should also have 8 cells which are barred off completely (include edges of the grid). These 8 letters form an anagram of the person's name. The first word of the clue to 2 Down is also a hint.
