Completed the grid, but am unsure where all the extra words are. I have 4 possibles, 2 of which feel like instructions, and 2 from the down clues which frankly don't. Is there an extra word in 29ac? Clue: king east of large country invading coastal city, invading African capital (6). Answer is an African capital.

Have not found the five words. Is a Loftus one of your choices, Barista?

29a looks all right
King east of large country - USAK - in coastal city - LA
Answer is an African capital.

I have Loftus as an extra. Presumably it needs to be broken down in some way.

I haven't got all the extra words, but I really can't see one in 29 A - everything parses totally, with nothing left over! (Coastal city, large country inside (invading) with the king east of it).

Yes Loftus is there (and there are lots of USs in the grid). Other words i think I have are in 13a, 30a and 2d. It just struck me that 29a , while parsing fine, has more words than are needed. But adding 'coastal' or 'large' to my other extras leads me nowhere anyway.

I think 22D has an extra word which, like the one in 2D, can be broken down to give two words.

Ah, the other word is in 22d. Still makes no sense to me, so maybe I've got one or more wrong.

Nelson you posted at the same time as me! Have you got a message from them?

I think I have the full instruction, but not quite sure how to interpret it.
