There are two clues whose answers are connected.

A Down clue: Calm pronouncement of man on board (5)

I think the answer could be PEACE or PIECE.

The third letter (i.e. A or E) is the second letter of the Across clue, as so:

Confederate south to north, perhaps (7)

And the answer should be as follows:

_(A or E)_T_E_

I think the answer could be PARTNER, but I cannot work out how that matches the clue.

Any ideas?

I think Partner is correct. Confederate also means southerner in the US. So south in respect of north implies this. See link

Thanks, jazzgirl. That clears up the mystery (at least, for me). (And I must remember the word "parsing", which I was looking for, but couldn't quite get it.)

Which reminds me of a guy who went into the hospital to ask for a castration. After the operation, the doctor told him that while he was at it, he did a circumcision on him, to which the guy excitedly said, "That was the word I was looking for when I came into the hospital."
