I have a completed grid, know what the theme is, and have found 21 clashes all using two of the same 3 letters, all consistent with the theme. The question is, how to resolve the clashes to reveal the 3 consistent clusters. Any hints as to how to do this would be welcome.

Look at the clashes- 3 groups and first look at the shapes of all the clashes

As you say! I suppose each set of clashes is resolved by its relevant letter. I had assumed that the clashes would result in real words but should have realised that that was impossible.

Yes to the relevant letter- then just the 12 letter character to find (6-6)
