Both words begin with same letter as clue is for 1a and 1d

Thin shoulder straps are known as "spaghetti" possibly?

Thought of that but, like you, could not justify.
Pretty sure e is second last letter of 1a which would fit with shoulder. Also felt it had to begin with an s.
Anyone out there got an explanation?

I thought of emasculate but I couldn't figure out why. Also, emancipate - same problem. Thanks for your help.
